It’s nearly impossible to drive or walk through any Palm Springs neighborhood, these days, without seeing one of these Desert Water Agency’s Turf Buy Back program signs. The water conservation program was launched August 1, 2014.
I spotted this sign on my walk around the Canyon View Estates neighborhood this morning and thought I would share it with others who might not be aware of the city’s water conservation program.
The program requires property owners to fill out an application and successfully complete a pre-conversion site inspection with DWA. Residents are eligible for a $2 per square foot rebate of up to $3,000 for the removal of their lawns.
In addition, once you have converted your yard to desert landscaping (xeriscaping), you will likely see a dramatic decrease in your monthly water bill. We removed our grass many years ago and even though we have a private pool and spa, our monthly water bills average $25 a month. It’s not unusual for our friends, with grass lawns, to pay five to 10 times that much per month for water!
