If you’re looking for a midcentury modern home, and have champagne tastes, but a beer budget–as the saying goes–Blue Skies Village, in Rancho Mirage, might be an options.
I just sold this iconic, 1960 mid-century modern mobile home (which has appeared in architectural books, magazines and TV shows) for $161,000. If this were a single family, midcentury modern home in Rancho Mirage, it would have sold for three to four times the asking price of this home.
Blue Skies Village was also featured on the Palm Springs Modernism Week home tour schedule, last year, because of it’s unique mid-century modern mobile homes and trailers.
The historic mobile home and trailer park was developed by Bing Crosby in the 1950s, and is one of the most famous parks in the country. You own the land here, HOA fees are only $200 a month and home prices are very budget-friendly.
Dream boy James is a 32-year old gay man who went on realty TV to find love among a group of 15 contestants. The show was set in Palm Springs, California in a very cool mid-century modern home that was just as dreamy as the shows star.
The show premiered July 29, 2003, on the Bravo cable television channel and is now available on DVD.

In 1965, my family purchased this modern Palm Springs home and I fell in love with modern architecture at first sight. I honestly don’t remember my first kiss, but I can vividly remember walking into this home for the first time and having my breath taken away by the wall of glass overlooking the city of Palm Springs below.
Like me, many 50+ home buyers grew up in modern homes in the 1960s, now referred to as midcentury modern homes. And, like me, these home buyers have many fond memories attached to them.
In addition to the nostalgia factor, these homes were built pre HOA fees. In Palm Springs, many of these midcentury modern homes are on Fee Simple land (you own it) and there are no HOA fees, which can add up to big savings over time. Because there are no HOAs, owners have a lot more freedom and flexibility–that’s what the ’60s were all about–to landscape, paint and decorate their homes the way the want.
If that weren’t enough, most of these homes were built in the very best locations, when much of Palm Springs was still open desert land. Land was cheap and abundant and lots were much larger than they are today.
So, if you’re a baby boomer looking for an affordable home with that extra nostalgia factor, contact me today and I’ll help you find the perfect Palm Springs midcentury modern retirement home. Who says we can’t re-live our Wonder Years in our Golden Years with even more peace, love and fun in the sun?

Nat King Cole did it better, in my opinion, but Hoagy Carmichael’s original version of the classic “Stardust” is still one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. (On a side note, you can still hear “Stardust” on the radio, nearly every day, by tuning into the desert’s classic station www.KWXY.com)
Carmichael was a composer, singer, actor and bandleader. He is best known for composing the music for “Stardust”, “Georgia on My Mind”, “The Nearness of You”, and “Heart and Soul”, four of the most-recorded American songs of all time, according to Wikipedia.
Carmichael died of heart failure at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, California, on December 27, 1981.
Today, his mid-century modern home, located on the 8th green of the Thunderbird Country Club, is for sale. The home was originally designed by starchitect William Cody for Carmichael and offers breathtaking views of the mountains, golf course and lake, from nearly every room in the house.
To bring it up to today’s standards, the estate was renovated in 2004. According to the listing agent, “the design of this ranch style mid-century home, popular in the 1950’s, was followed as closely as possible to maintain the integrity of it’s historic value. Every detail of this home was done with only the finest quality materials including polished concrete floors, granite countertops, tinted double paned windows throughout and much more.”
